After a devastating stampede at his rally in Tamil Nadu’s Karur that killed 38 people, including 10 children, TVK chief Vijay finally responds with an emotional message.
Vijay Breaks Silence After Karur Stampede Tragedy
Actor-politician Vijay, President of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic stampede at his political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, which claimed 38 lives, including 10 children and 17 women.
What Happened?
- Over 30,000 people gathered in Karur to see Vijay at a political roadshow on Saturday.
- Vijay arrived six hours late, by which time the crowd had swelled uncontrollably.
- The stampede occurred due to suffocation, heat, and overcrowding.
- Ambulances were delayed due to blocked roads, worsening the crisis.
Vijay’s First Reaction on X (formerly Twitter)
Hours after the incident and after avoiding the media at Chennai airport, Vijay posted an emotional message on social media:
“My heart is shattered; I am writhing in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow that words cannot express.”
He continued:
“I extend my deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of my dear brothers and sisters who lost their lives in Karur. I pray for the swift recovery of those receiving treatment in the hospital.”
Accusations of Negligence and Political Fallout
DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai strongly criticized the event organizers, calling the crowd build-up a “deliberate ploy”:
“They made people wait nearly six hours to showcase support. This is criminal negligence. Vijay is culpable and cannot escape responsibility.”
He demanded strict action and arrests.
Government Response
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has:
- Announced ₹10 lakh ex-gratia for the families of the deceased
- Ordered a judicial inquiry, led by Justice Aruna Jagadeesan, retired High Court judge
- Promised top-tier medical treatment for the injured
- Scheduled a visit to Karur to meet affected families and victims
“The loss of these precious lives has shaken the hearts of us all,” Stalin said in a statement.
Is Vijay Responsible?
This is the second major incident involving massive crowds at Vijay’s rallies. The Madras High Court and police had previously warned TVK about crowd control failures, especially after a chaotic rally in Trichy earlier this month.
Despite 23 safety conditions issued by police—including no children, elderly, or pregnant women at events—many of these rules were violated.
