Food delivered in black plastic takeaway containers may pose health risks, especially when used for hot or oily dishes, a nutrition expert has cautioned.
The warning highlights possible chemical exposure from commonly used delivery packaging.
What The Expert Said
According to nutritionist Dr Nandita Iyer:
- Many black plastic containers are made from recycled plastic waste
- Some material may come from electronic scrap and PVC
- These materials are not designed for food contact
She explained the black colour hides mixed low-grade plastics used in manufacturing.

Health Risk Explained
Experts say problems increase when containers contact heat or certain foods:
- Hot food
- Oily curries
- Acidic dishes
Under such conditions, containers may release harmful chemicals including flame retardants and heavy metals into food.
These substances are linked to hormone disruption, neurological effects and developmental concerns in children.
What You Should Do
The expert advises simple precautions:
- Do not microwave food in black plastic boxes
- Transfer food to steel or glass containers immediately
- Ask restaurants to avoid black plastic packaging
- Reduce reuse of takeaway containers
Paper boxes are not always safer as many contain plastic lining.
