In a major crackdown on alleged corruption in the Assam bureaucracy, Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer Nupur Bora was arrested on Monday after nearly ₹2 crore in cash and gold was recovered from her properties.

The arrest follows months of surveillance by the Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell, which had received complaints about Bora’s alleged involvement in controversial land transactions in minority-dominated areas.

What Was Seized in the Raid?

During simultaneous raids at her residences in Guwahati and Barpeta, officials seized:

  • ₹92 lakh in cash and jewellery worth nearly ₹1 crore from her Guwahati residence
  • ₹10 lakh in cash from a rented house in Barpeta
  • Several documents related to land ownership and deals

The total value of cash and jewellery recovered is close to ₹2 crore.

Allegations Against Nupur Bora

According to Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, Bora was under surveillance for six months due to:

  • Irregular land transactions in minority-dominated regions
  • Accepting bribes to illegally transfer land titles
  • Possession of wealth disproportionate to her known income

“She transferred Hindu land to suspicious individuals for money when posted in Barpeta,” said CM Sarma.

Alleged Aide Also Under Investigation

The Special Vigilance Cell also raided the home of Surajit Deka, a Lat Mandal (land records official) in Barpeta. He is accused of:

  • Colluding with Bora in land property deals
  • Acquiring multiple plots of land in Barpeta under suspicious circumstances
  • Acting as a middleman in illegal land transfers
