Legendary Assamese singer and multi-instrumentalist Zubeen Garg’s untimely death leaves a deep void in the music world
Zubeen Garg, the legendary Assamese singer and multi-instrumentalist, tragically passed away on September 19, 2025, in Singapore due to a scuba diving accident. His untimely death has sent shockwaves throughout the Indian music fraternity and his fans worldwide.
Born on November 18, 1972, in Tura, Meghalaya, Zubeen hailed from a distinguished Brahmin family. His father, Mohini Mohan Barthakur, was a judicial officer and poet, while his mother, Eli Barthakur, was a renowned singer. Music and literature ran deep in his family, which greatly influenced his artistic journey.
Zubeen was married to Garima Saikia Garg and had two daughters, Sagarika and Srishti. Known for his deep love and dedication to his family, he balanced his personal and professional life with great care.
In terms of property, Zubeen owned a two-storied building in Guwahati, Assam, which he generously donated during the COVID-19 pandemic to be used as a care center. This gesture reflected his commitment to social service. He was also actively involved in charity concerts and relief efforts during Assam’s frequent floods.
Zubeen Garg’s music career began in 1992 and spanned over three decades. He sang in over 40 languages including Assamese, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, and more. A versatile musician, he was proficient in more than 12 instruments such as guitar, tabla, drums, harmonium, and dotara. His soulful voice and meaningful compositions earned him a special place in the hearts of millions.
Apart from being a singer, Zubeen was a poet and author. His books “Xur” (Melody) and “Niyor” (Tear) gained critical acclaim, showcasing his literary talents and deep connection to Assamese culture.
Zubeen Garg’s passing has created a huge void in Assam’s cultural and music landscape. Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed profound grief, calling him “Assam’s beloved son and rockstar.” His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
