Detonators and Gelatin Sticks Found at Bengaluru Bus Stand, Triggers Security Alert

Police tighten security after suspicious bag recovered near BMTC Kalasipalya toilet.

In a major security scare, six gelatin sticks and several detonators were discovered inside a plastic carry bag near a toilet at the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) bus stand in Kalasipalya on Wednesday.

What Was Found?

  • Six gelatin sticks, a common explosive material used in mining and construction
  • Multiple detonators, which are devices used to trigger explosives
  • The bag was left unattended near the toilet area

What Are Gelatin Sticks and Detonators?

  • Gelatin Sticks:
    • Also known as gelignite, these are a powerful explosive material widely used for blasting in construction, quarrying, and mining.
    • They are stable to handle but extremely dangerous if improperly stored or triggered.
  • Detonators:
    • Small ignition devices that initiate an explosion in materials like gelatin sticks.
    • They can be electronic or mechanical, designed to trigger controlled blasts.

When combined, gelatin sticks and detonators can create a significant explosive impact, which is why their unmonitored presence raises serious security concerns.

Immediate Action by Authorities

  • Bomb disposal squad and police teams rushed to the spot.
  • The area around the toilet was cordoned off for public safety.
  • A detailed search operation and investigation is underway.

Official Statement

S Girish, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West Division, Bengaluru), confirmed the recovery, stating:

“Six gelatin sticks and some detonators were found in a carry bag outside the toilet inside Kalasipalya BMTC bus stand. FIR is yet to be registered.”

What Happens Next?

  • Forensic experts will examine the recovered explosives.
  • CCTV footage from the bus stand is being checked to identify the person who left the bag.
  • An FIR will be registered, and probe teams will investigate possible links to sabotage or terror activities.

This incident has heightened security concerns in Bengaluru, especially in public transport hubs.
