Raj Amit Kumar, known for his arthouse debut Unfreedom, is now exploring a more mainstream space with Bindiya Ke Bahubali. The series is an absurdist comedy-drama streaming on MX Player, set in the fictional city of Bindiya in Bihar.

Originally, the series had a different title. Kumar chose “Bindiya Ke Bahubali” because it blends masculine and feminine imagery—Bindiya representing women, Bahubali representing strength.
“Bindiya is a fictional city but also a reflection of India,” said Kumar. “The female characters hold as much weight as the male ones, and the title reflects that balance.”
Tackling Touchy Topics on Screen
With the success of shows like Dhadak 2 tackling caste issues, Kumar noted the difficulties filmmakers face when addressing sensitive topics for mainstream audiences:
- Prickly social issues are often avoided in mass-market cinema

“Absurdity in life is all around us. One tries to bring that in as honestly as possible within a genre,” said Kumar.
