"Bindiya Ke Bahubali" Director Raj Amit Kumar on Tackling Touchy Topics in Comedy-Drama

From Unfreedom to absurdist gangster drama, Raj Amit Kumar blends social issues with humor in his latest MX Player series.

From Arthouse to Gangster Comedy

Raj Amit Kumar, known for his arthouse debut Unfreedom, is now exploring a more mainstream space with Bindiya Ke Bahubali. The series is an absurdist comedy-drama streaming on MX Player, set in the fictional city of Bindiya in Bihar.

The show stars:

  • Saurabh Shukla
  • Ranvir Shorey
  • Sai Tamhankar
  • Sheeba Chaddha
  • Seema Biswas
  • Sushant Singh
  • Vineet Kumar
  • Tannishtha Chatterjee
  • Dibyendu Bhattacharya

The plot revolves around power struggles when the city’s don, Badaa Davan, is jailed. Humour, absurdity, and betrayal take center stage as various factions try to claim control of Bindiya.

Themes: Caste, Displacement, and Power

Kumar has consistently explored sensitive social issues:

  • Caste divides
  • Poverty
  • Displacement
  • Political and law enforcement absurdities

“The idea was to wrap important issues in a genre which a larger audience would like to see,” Kumar told the news agency.

He believes mainstream films avoid “prickly topics,” so creators must find innovative ways to express truths beyond laughter and comedy.

The Making of Bindiya Ke Bahubali

Originally, the series had a different title. Kumar chose “Bindiya Ke Bahubali” because it blends masculine and feminine imagery—Bindiya representing women, Bahubali representing strength.

“Bindiya is a fictional city but also a reflection of India,” said Kumar. “The female characters hold as much weight as the male ones, and the title reflects that balance.”

Tackling Touchy Topics on Screen

With the success of shows like Dhadak 2 tackling caste issues, Kumar noted the difficulties filmmakers face when addressing sensitive topics for mainstream audiences:

  • Prickly social issues are often avoided in mass-market cinema
  • Filmmakers need creative ways to embed social commentary in entertainment
  • Comedy and absurdity provide a medium to discuss serious topics

Absurdity, Humor, and Future Seasons

The show mixes absurdity with social commentary, reflecting the complexities of everyday life:

“Absurdity in life is all around us. One tries to bring that in as honestly as possible within a genre,” said Kumar.

Kumar also confirmed that audiences can expect more seasons of Bindiya Ke Bahubali in the future.

With its mix of humor, absurdity, and social commentary, Bindiya Ke Bahubali showcases Raj Amit Kumar’s bold storytelling. The series not only entertains but also provokes thought on caste, power, and displacement, making it a must-watch on MX Player. Audiences can look forward to future seasons that continue to explore these themes with wit and insight.
