BJP’s Maharashtra Mission: From Civic Body to 2029 Assembly
With Mumbai’s civic elections fast approaching, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leaving no stone unturned. While rivals regroup, the BJP has kept its momentum going, continuing cadre-building and inducting new leaders every week.
After a resounding win in the 2024 Assembly elections—claiming 132 of 288 seats—the party now eyes an even bigger goal: forming the government in 2029 without relying on allies.
Focus on Strengthening the Ground Game
- BJP has intensified recruitment across regions like Vasai, Raigad, Dharashiv, and Amravati
- Over 50 leaders joined the party on Tuesday, many from the Congress and Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena
- The event was led by BJP’s Maharashtra chief Ravindra Chavan
“It is important for us to have a government of one thought,” said Chavan, stressing ideological alignment across all levels.
He also underlined that state and central policies will only be effective if implemented by the local governing bodies, hence the importance of the upcoming civic polls.
Uddhav Thackeray’s Sena in a Crucial Transition
On the other side, Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena faces challenges. The party, which once won 56 Assembly seats in 2019, saw a steep drop to just 20 in 2024.

- Reports of ‘Operation Tiger’—an alleged strategy by the ruling alliance to weaken Thackeray’s base—have added pressure

- The Congress, and factions led by Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray, are focused on reconnecting with voters

While the civic body election is the immediate focus, the BJP has its sights set on a larger, long-term goal — forming the Maharashtra government on its own in 2029.
With strong central and state backing, and a renewed push for ideological alignment, the BJP is shaping its strategy from the grassroots upward.
