The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has approved significant updates to the Legal Studies syllabus for Classes 11 and 12. These changes aim to align the curriculum with recent legal reforms and landmark judgments, replacing outdated colonial-era laws.
Key Legal Reforms Included
Senior secondary students will now study laws and doctrines that reflect India’s evolving legal landscape:
- Triple Talaq Repeal: Criminalisation removed, replaced with modern family law frameworks.
- Sedition Abolition: Colonial-era sedition law removed from curriculum.
- Section 377 Repeal: Decriminalisation of homosexuality, replacing the 1861 IPC provision.
- New Codes: Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bhartiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bhartiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) replace IPC, CrPC, and Indian Evidence Act.
Curriculum Committee & Governing Body Approval
According to CBSE officials, the Curriculum Committee proposed the changes, and the Governing Body ratified them in June. The revised syllabus will reflect:
- Key provisions of BNS, BNSS, and BSA
- Landmark judgments and evolving legal doctrines
- Repealed or outdated laws, including triple talaq, sedition, and Section 377
- Engaging teaching methods aligned with NEP 2020
Implementation Timeline
- CBSE plans to form an expert committee and possibly hire a content development agency.
- Updated textbooks are expected for the 2026-27 academic year.
