The FASTag Annual Pass launched on Independence Day sparked massive registrations—over 5 lakh in four days—but not all highways and expressways are covered. Know what’s included and what’s out of scope.
What Is the FASTag Annual Pass?
Launched on August 15, 2025 (India’s Independence Day), the FASTag Annual Pass lets private vehicle owners pay a one-time fee of ₹3,000 for up to 200 toll crossings or one year of access—whichever is earlier—on eligible National Highways and Expressways managed by NHAI and MoRTH.
Skyrocketing Popularity
- 1.4 lakh users signed up on Day 1
- Registrations crossed 5 lakh in four days
The pass is seen as a cost-effective and time-saving alternative to frequent recharges.
Eligibility and Key Details
- Who can apply?
Available only for private, non-commercial cars, jeeps, and vans with an active FASTag linked to a valid Vehicle Registration Number. - How to activate:
Use the Rajmarg Yatra app or NHAI/MoRTH portal, submit your VRN and FASTag ID, make the ₹3,000 payment, and your pass typically activates in under two hours.
What the Pass Doesn’t Cover
The annual pass is limited to tolls on National Highways and National Expressways managed by NHAI or MoRTH. It does not apply to:
- State Highways
- Expressways managed by state or private authorities (e.g., Yamuna, Purvanchal, Agra‑Lucknow Expressways)
- Municipal/Local tolls, commercial vehicles, or parking charges—these will be billed as usual.
Usage Details and What’s Next
Feature | Details |
---|---|
Trip Counting | Each toll crossing counts as one trip; closed-loop plazas count as one trip per entry–exit. |
Non-transferable | The pass is vehicle-specific. Transfer voids it. |
Automatic Reversion | Once your 200 trips are used or a year passes, FASTag reverts to regular mode. Renewal is required to continue. |
Why This Matters
For frequent highway commuters, the pass unlocks savings, convenience, and faster journeys. But know where it works—and where it doesn’t—to avoid unexpected charges and disruptions.
In summary, the FASTag Annual Pass offers a convenient and economical way for private vehicle owners to travel on many National Highways and Expressways across India. However, travelers should be aware of its limitations on certain state-managed expressways and local tolls. Staying informed will help you make the most of this new prepaid toll system and enjoy hassle-free journeys on eligible routes.
