Himachal in Crisis: 109 Dead, Roads Cut Off as Rains Trigger Landslides

Torrential rain wreaks havoc across Mandi, Kullu, Kangra & Sirmaur; over 130 water schemes hit, power disrupted in 52 regions

Monsoon Fury Claims Over 100 Lives

Between June 20 and July 16, 2025, 109 people lost their lives in Himachal Pradesh due to relentless monsoon rains, according to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA):

  • 64 deaths caused by rain-related disasters.
  • 45 deaths reported in road accidents.

Roads, Power & Water Disrupted

As of July 17, the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) reported:

  • 226 roads blocked, including National Highway 707 near Uttari.
  • 52 Distribution Transformer Regions (DTRs) without power.
  • 137 water supply schemes disrupted across districts like Mandi, Kullu, Kangra, and Sirmaur.

District-Wise Toll of Rain-Linked Deaths

Rain-related fatalities were attributed to landslides, flash floods, cloudbursts, electrocution, snake bites, and falls:

  • Mandi & Kangra: 16 deaths each
  • Hamirpur: 8 deaths
  • Kullu: 4 deaths
  • Chamba: 3 deaths

Accidents Add to Toll

45 people died in road accidents during the same period:

  • Kullu & Solan: 7 deaths each
  • Chamba: 6 deaths
  • Additional casualties in Shimla, Kangra, Kinnaur, and Mandi

Massive Infrastructure & Livestock Loss

The SDMA also reported:

  • Estimated damages exceeding ₹883 crore
  • 1,228 cattle and 21,500 poultry birds perished
  • Widespread damage to roads, bridges, irrigation systems, buildings, and power infrastructure

Government Steps In

  • Continuous monitoring activated through SEOC
  • Relief operations underway, with compensation to affected families
  • Citizens advised to remain alert amid continuing heavy rainfall warnings

Central Assistance Sought

  • Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi
  • CM informed the Centre of ₹1000 crore damages so far this season
  • Requested immediate central support for relief and restoration
  • Highlighted that recurring natural disasters since 2023 have caused cumulative losses of over ₹21,000 crore
