Shahzad Akbar Hospitalised With Facial Injuries; Supporters Allege ‘Transnational Repression’
An aide to former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was attacked in the United Kingdom days after a video of his speech criticising Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir went viral online.
Shahzad Akbar, who served as an accountability adviser in Imran Khan’s government, was assaulted near his home in Cambridge, according to people close to him.
What Happened
Reports said Akbar was attacked by masked men outside his residence. He suffered injuries to his face, including fractures to his nose and jaw, and was taken to hospital for treatment.
The attack took place shortly after Akbar delivered a speech that strongly criticised Asim Munir. The video of the speech was widely shared on social media and drew sharp reactions.
Viral Speech Against Asim Munir
In the speech, Akbar accused Pakistan’s military leadership of ruling through fear and intimidation. He also claimed that dissenting voices were being silenced.
Supporters believe the attack was linked to the speech, though this has not been officially confirmed.
Supporters Raise Concerns
Akbar’s supporters have alleged that the assault may be an example of political intimidation beyond borders. They described the incident as an attempt to silence critics living abroad.
Pakistan’s government has earlier sought Akbar’s extradition from the UK in connection with cases filed against him in Pakistan. He has denied the allegations.
Earlier Attack Mentioned
This is not the first time Akbar has reported being attacked. In 2023, he said he was targeted in an acid attack outside his UK home.
The latest incident has renewed concerns about the safety of political figures overseas.
Police in the UK are investigating the case. No arrests have been announced so far.
