"Silence Only Empowers the Bully": Chinese Envoy Slams US Tariffs, Calls for Stronger India-China Unity

Chinese Ambassador urges India-China cooperation amid global shifts, criticizes US tariff policies, and emphasizes the need for mutual trust and strategic collaboration.

Chinese Envoy Slams US Tariff Policies

Chinese Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, has strongly criticized the United States for its aggressive trade practices, describing the use of tariffs as a form of economic coercion. Speaking at an event organized by the Chintan Research Foundation (CRF), Xu said:

“The US has long benefited from free trade, but now it uses tariffs as bargaining chips to demand exorbitant prices. Silence only emboldens the bully.”

He pointed out that the US has imposed tariffs of up to 50% on Indian goods, with threats of further increases. Xu emphasized China’s opposition to these tactics and expressed solidarity with India in defending the global multilateral trading system.

China and India: Twin Engines of Asian Growth

Highlighting the ongoing geopolitical and economic transformations, Xu urged China and India to deepen cooperation as two of the world’s leading developing economies.

“China will firmly stand with India. We are the double engines of economic growth in Asia,” he said, emphasizing that India-China unity benefits not just the region but the entire world.

Cooperation Over Competition: A Call for Strategic Trust

Xu stressed the importance of strategic mutual trust between the two nations, advocating for dialogue over suspicion and viewing each other as partners rather than rivals.

Key Statements from the Chinese Ambassador:

  • “All Indian commodities are welcome in the Chinese market.”
  • “India has a competitive edge in IT, software, and biomedicine.”
  • “China leads in electronic manufacturing, infrastructure, and new energy.”
  • “Together, the two markets can produce results greater than the sum of their parts.”

Global Stability Through Regional Unity

Xu also emphasized that India and China share a responsibility to promote an equal, multipolar world order, stating:

“India and China must lead efforts toward global stability and equitable development.”

Context: High-Level India-China Engagements

Xu Feihong’s remarks follow a recent meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Delhi. The conversation has added momentum to diplomatic exchanges ahead of PM Modi’s anticipated visit to China for the upcoming SCO leaders’ summit later this year.

The Chinese envoy’s message was clear: global challenges require collective solutions, and in the face of rising protectionism and unilateralism, India and China must reinforce their partnership. His statements mark a significant diplomatic gesture, calling for unity, cooperation, and economic integration between Asia’s two largest economies.
