New Delhi condemns “nuclear sabre-rattling” remarks, vows to safeguard national security
India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Monday strongly criticised Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir’s recent nuclear threat against India.
The MEA said it was “regrettable” that such comments were made from the soil of a friendly third country — the United States — and reaffirmed that India will take all necessary steps to protect its national security.
Pakistan’s ‘Stock-in-Trade’ Nuclear Rhetoric
In a statement, the MEA said:
- Nuclear sabre-rattling is Pakistan’s stock-in-trade.
- Remarks like these highlight “the irresponsibility inherent in such statements”.
- The comments reinforce concerns about Pakistan’s nuclear command and control in a state where the military has close links with terrorist groups.
Indian Government Sources Call Pakistan ‘Irresponsible’
Government sources described Pakistan as an irresponsible nuclear state, claiming that its military rulers frequently resort to threats when backed by international allies.
They pointed to:
- A pattern where Pakistani military shows aggression when supported by the United States.
- Risks of nuclear weapons falling into the hands of non-state actors in Pakistan.
- Lack of democracy in Pakistan, with the military firmly in control.
What Asim Munir Said in Florida
Speaking to a gathering of Pakistanis in Tampa, Florida, General Munir allegedly made the most direct nuclear threat from US soil against a third country.
According to reports, Munir stated:
“We are a nuclear nation. If we think we are going down, we’ll take half the world down with us.”
He also:
- Threatened to destroy any infrastructure India builds on Indus water channels.
- Warned that the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty could lead to mass starvation in Pakistan.
- Claimed his country has “no shortage of missiles”.
India reiterated that it will never yield to nuclear blackmail and will continue to act decisively to safeguard national security.
The MEA’s sharp response signals that New Delhi views Munir’s remarks as provocative, dangerous, and deeply irresponsible.
