Man Alleges Inconsistent Airport Weighing Scales; IndiGo and Goa Airport Clarify Their Stand
Viral Claim: Passenger Calls Out “Baggage Weighing Scam”
A Chandigarh man has alleged that IndiGo Airlines overcharged him for excess baggage, calling it a “daylight robbery” due to inconsistent weighing scales at Goa Airport. The post, shared by Rattan Dhillon, has gone viral and sparked online debate around airport baggage charges and weighing accuracy.
assenger’s Allegation: Same Bag, Three Different Weights
In his complaint, Dhillon claimed that while boarding IndiGo flight 6E724 from Goa to Chandigarh, the same bag showed different weights on three separate weighing belts:
- 18 kg on the first belt
- 16 kg on the second
- 15 kg on the third
Despite these variations, Dhillon was allegedly told by staff:
“Sir, the 15 kg machine must be wrong, 18 is the correct weight.”
He said he ended up paying ₹11,900 in excess baggage charges, including ₹1,500 for carrying an umbrella.
To verify the claim, he re-weighed the bag at his hotel and said it weighed exactly 15 kg, accusing the airline of “inflating” baggage weight by 2–3 kg.
IndiGo’s Official Response
In response, IndiGo stated that no discrepancies were found in their weighing equipment. Their statement included:
“Mr. Dhillon, we tried reaching you on the registered contact number but were unable to connect. All baggage weighing scales are routinely calibrated and certified by airport authorities.”
The airline also confirmed an internal review was conducted in coordination with the Goa Airport team, and no faults were detected.
They further clarified:
“The total checked-in baggage for you and your co-travellers was 52 kg across three passengers, exceeding the permissible limit by 7 kg. The applicable excess baggage charges were levied.”
What Goa Airport Said
Goa International Airport also weighed in, stating:
“To authenticate the weighing machines at check-in counters, annual certification is carried out by the Office of the Controller, Legal Metrology, Government of Goa.”
