Sri Lanka Breaks Ground on Jaffna’s First International Cricket Stadium

Sri Lanka President Anura Kumara Dissanayake inaugurates the foundation stone for the construction of the Jaffna International Cricket Stadium (JICS) in Mandaitivu, Jaffna, on September 1, 2025

A Landmark Moment for Northern Cricket

On September 1, 2025, Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake inaugurated the Jaffna International Cricket Stadium by laying its foundation stone on Mandaitivu Island. This marks a significant milestone in Sri Lanka’s cricketing history, bringing international-standard facilities to the Northern Province.

Stadium Specifications

  • Location: Mandaitivu, Jaffna
  • Seating Capacity: 40,000 spectators
  • Field Dimensions: 10 center wickets with boundary distances up to 80 meters
  • Floodlights: Yes, making it the fifth floodlit stadium in Sri Lanka

The stadium is part of a broader 138-acre “Sports City” development, which will include a swimming pool complex, multi-sport indoor arena, hotels, restaurants, shopping mall, and entertainment facilities.

Vision for Unity and Development

President Dissanayake emphasized that the stadium is not just a sports venue but a symbol of national unity. He envisions a Sri Lankan national cricket team representing all communities—Sinhalese, Tamil, and Muslim—with fans from every background cheering together in one stadium.

Project Phases and Timeline

The construction will proceed in four phases:

  1. Phase 1: Stadium and pavilion construction to enable match play
  2. Phase 2: Main grandstand and media center
  3. Phase 3: Completion of remaining stands
  4. Phase 4: Installation of floodlights

The first match is anticipated to take place before the end of this year, with the stadium expected to be fully operational within three years.

International Support and Collaboration

Former Sri Lankan cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya has sought support from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the project. PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and expressed willingness to assist in making the Jaffna stadium a reality.

Impact on Northern Cricket

The Jaffna International Cricket Stadium is set to be Sri Lanka’s seventh international cricket venue and the fifth equipped with floodlights. It will serve as a premier destination for international cricket in the region, promoting the sport and providing equal opportunities for talented cricketers across the island.
