Kapil Dev Appeals for Stray Dogs’ Welfare Amid Supreme Court Controversy

Legendary cricketer urges Delhi authorities to ensure better life for stray dogs following SC directive on their transfer to shelters

Legendary 1983 World Cup-winning Indian cricket skipper Kapil Dev has called on Delhi authorities to provide a better life for stray dogs. His plea comes after a recent Supreme Court order directing the transfer of stray dogs from public spaces to shelter homes.

In a video message for animal welfare group Petfamilia, Kapil Dev said:

“I know a lot of things are being said about the dogs. But, as a citizen, I feel they are the most beautiful creatures. So I request authorities to look into them and give them a better life and don’t throw them out.”

Supreme Court Order Sparks Controversy

The Supreme Court had earlier instructed the Delhi government and concerned authorities to remove stray dogs from public areas and house them in shelters. This directive led to protests by animal rights activists, who raised concerns over the practical implementation of the order.

A bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath, Justice Sandeep Mehta, and Justice NV Anjaria questioned why authorities began picking up stray dogs even before the earlier order was publicly notified. The court criticized lapses in implementing proper animal control guidelines, which contributed to the controversy.

Delhi Government Cites Public Safety Concerns

Representing the Delhi government, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta highlighted risks to public safety, including dog attacks, injuries, and rabies-related deaths. He stated:

  • “Children are dying. Sterilisation does not stop rabies.”
  • “No one hates animals, but some are dangerous. Dogs need to be separated, not killed.”
  • Government data shows 37 lakh dog bite cases last year.

Mehta emphasized that parents cannot safely let children play outdoors, and young girls are vulnerable to attacks, making intervention necessary.

Public Response and Next Steps

The matter follows a rowdy protest by animal lovers after an August 11 order by a two-judge SC bench led to heated debate on stray dog removal from residential areas. Authorities are now under scrutiny to implement humane solutions while ensuring public safety.

Kapil Dev’s appeal highlights the need to balance animal welfare with public safety. Authorities are under pressure to implement the Supreme Court’s order humanely, while addressing concerns of residents and animal rights activists alike.
