Karisma Kapoor Was Treated Like a Trophy Wife in Her Marriage to Sunjay Kapur: Director Reveals

Sunjay Kapur, ex-husband of Bollywood star Karisma Kapoor, reportedly never gave her the domestic life she hoped for, says filmmaker Suneel Darshan.

Karisma Kapoor’s Troubled Marriage Back in Spotlight After Sunjay Kapur’s Death

The tragic death of businessman and polo enthusiast Sunjay Kapur in London on June 12 has stirred up old memories — and controversies — surrounding his high-profile marriage to Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor.

Filmmaker Suneel Darshan, who directed Karisma in films like Jaanwar and Ek Rishtaa, opened up in a recent interview, revealing emotional and cultural struggles Karisma allegedly faced in her marriage.

“She Became a Trophy Wife” – A Director’s Candid Take

In an interview with journalist Vickey Lalwani, Suneel Darshan described Karisma’s marriage as one that stripped her of identity.

“She wanted to be a homely, family-oriented wife but was pushed into the role of a trophy wife,” he said.

He suggested the real trouble stemmed from cultural mismatch and unrealistic expectations placed on Karisma.

“She was placed into a world that was not hers… Delhi has its own culture, and she wasn’t fitting into it,” Darshan added.

From Childhood Friends to an Abrupt Wedding

Suneel revealed that Karisma had been close friends with Sunjay’s sister, not romantically involved with Sunjay initially.
Despite the bond, the marriage was rushed, he claimed.

“Some things just need to be buried… It was an abrupt decision. The split with Abhishek Bachchan was also sudden. It was sad.”

Why Karisma Felt Out of Place in the Kapur Mansion

According to the filmmaker, Karisma — born into Bollywood royalty as Raj Kapoor’s granddaughter — had seen fame and luxury. But she was looking for a quieter life when she got married.

Instead, she found herself in a lavish Delhi mansion, surrounded by status symbols but feeling isolated and misunderstood.

“She didn’t want golf or cocktail parties… She wanted to raise a family, live simply,” said Darshan.
