Janmashtami commemorates the birth of Shri Krishna in Mathura, during a time of chaos and evil. According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Krishna came into the world to restore dharma (righteousness) and defeat evil forces like Kansa, his tyrant uncle.
How is Janmashtami Celebrated in India?
🛕 1. Fasting & Devotion
- Devotees observe Nirjala or phalahari fasts throughout the day.
- Chanting of the Hare Krishna Mahamantra and Bhagavad Gita recitations is common.
🌙 2. Midnight Puja
- At midnight (the believed time of Krishna’s birth), temples and homes come alive with bhajans, aarti, and Krishna janm rituals.
- Idols of baby Krishna (Laddu Gopal) are bathed, dressed, and placed in decorated cradles.
👶 3. Dahi Handi Celebrations
- In Maharashtra and other parts of India, Dahi Handi (pot breaking) events are held to recreate Krishna’s playful nature.
- Youth groups form human pyramids to break pots filled with curd, butter, and sweets.
🎨 4. Decorations & Rangoli
- Temples and homes are decorated with flowers, diyas, torans, and rangoli.
- Little children dress up as Radha-Krishna, adding to the festive charm.
