Rome Airport Opens Luxury Dog Hotel: A Game-Changer for Pet Owners Who Travel

Fiumicino International Airport introduces ‘Dog Relais’ – a premium on-site facility offering pampered stays for pets while their owners fly stress-free

A Stress-Free Solution for Traveling Dog Parents

Dog parents know the drill: finding a trustworthy sitter, booking a kennel, worrying throughout the trip. But now, Rome’s Fiumicino International Airport (Leonardo da Vinci Airport) is making travel with pets much easier – by launching Dog Relais, a luxury dog hotel within the airport premises.

The facility is one of the first of its kind at a major European airport, following a similar concept in Frankfurt. Its goal? To let passengers travel stress-free while their dogs receive top-tier care just minutes from the terminal.

“We provide services for both dogs and their owners,” said Marilena Blasi, Chief Commercial Officer of Aeroporti di Roma.
“It’s about creating a seamless and immersive experience.”

What Dog Relais Offers

Basic stay:

  • €40 per night (approx ₹4,100)
  • Climate-controlled floors
  • Private gardens
  • Soothing 432 Hz ambient music for nighttime relaxation

Premium stay:

  • €60 per night (approx ₹6,200)
  • 24/7 live video calls with your pet via dedicated screens
  • Treat-tossing via an app
  • Personal webcam access

Extras available:

  • Grooming & bathing
  • Teeth cleaning
  • Aromatherapy (lavender, peppermint)
  • Arnica cream massages for sore muscles
  • Training sessions on request

Timid or less social dogs can opt for quieter rooms that minimize interaction with other pets and prioritize staff attention.

Convenient Drop-Off and Pick-Up

The airport’s staff retrieve dogs directly from the terminal, allowing travelers to proceed directly to check-in and security. No need to drive to a separate kennel or daycare location.

Not Just for Travelers

Locals are also using Dog Relais for daily dog daycare. Alessandra Morelli, a human resources executive at Aeroporti di Roma, praised the service:

“Since I’ve been able to bring my Labrador Nina here, my work-life balance has completely changed.”

Another dog parent, Dario Chiassarini, brings his Rottweiler puppy for training and plans to board her there during vacations.

Growing Popularity

  • 40 rooms fully booked in August
  • 66% average occupancy since opening in May 2025
  • High demand expected year-round due to convenience and luxury offerings

Pet-Friendly Aviation Policy Update in Italy

In a related move, Italy’s aviation authority has recently changed flight rules to allow large dogs in airplane cabins on domestic routes, provided they’re secured in proper crates.

The first such flight is scheduled for September 23, as announced by Transport Minister Matteo Salvini. Speaking at a pet conference, he called the move:

“A step forward in terms of civilization.”

Rome’s Fiumicino Airport is setting a new standard in pet-friendly travel. Dog Relais isn’t just a kennel — it’s a five-star experience for dogs, and a peace-of-mind solution for owners who love to travel.
