The filmmaker shares how Madhuri’s secretary influenced her decision to reject Govinda’s early film and how that impacted both their careers
A Missed Opportunity in Bollywood
Veteran filmmaker Pahlaj Nihalani has opened up about a major casting decision from the 1980s that could have changed the course of two legendary careers — Madhuri Dixit and Govinda. According to Nihalani, Madhuri was supposed to star opposite Govinda in the film Ilzaam, but she eventually declined the offer.
Surprisingly, this rejection wasn’t entirely her own decision. Nihalani claims that her secretary at the time, Rikku Rakesh Nath, played a key role in influencing her.
What Pahlaj Nihalani Said
In a recent interview with Pinkvilla, Pahlaj Nihalani recalled:
“I met Govinda through Rikku Rakesh Nath and recommended him to manage Madhuri Dixit. I had signed Govinda and Madhuri together for Ilzaam. But later, Rikku and a group of producers turned against Govinda. They discouraged Madhuri from working with him, saying it wouldn’t help her career.”
Madhuri eventually backed out of the project. She was replaced by Neelam Kothari, who then starred in Ilzaam — a film that went on to become a box office hit and gave Govinda his big break.
Rejection Led to Replacement (And Hits)
- After Ilzaam, Pahlaj offered Madhuri the lead role in Aag Hi Aag — another film she declined.
- Once again, Neelam stepped in, and that film too became a success.
- This trend continued with Paap Ki Duniya, where Neelam again replaced Madhuri and delivered a hit.
“I got frustrated,” Nihalani said. “Madhuri kept refusing my films while her own projects were either flopping or getting shelved. Meanwhile, the films I made with Neelam were celebrating golden jubilees.”
Why Nihalani Got Upset With Madhuri Dixit
Pahlaj Nihalani admitted he was angry and disappointed by Madhuri’s constant refusals.
“Rikku always had excuses. I finally criticized them in an interview. It felt like Madhuri was being misled. I had launched her secretary’s career, and he was now blocking projects.”
Tezaab: The Turning Point
Eventually, Rikku requested Pahlaj to help launch Madhuri properly. Responding to the request, Nihalani agreed to make Tezaab, casting Madhuri Dixit, Anil Kapoor, and Chunky Panday.
The result? A career-defining hit for Madhuri that made her a household name overnight.
When Madhuri and Govinda Finally Collaborated
Though they missed the chance to debut together, Madhuri and Govinda later appeared in:
- Maha-Sangram
- Izzatdaar
- Paap Ka Ant
But Pahlaj still believes the duo could have created on-screen magic much earlier, had it not been for that initial rejection.
In Summary:
- Madhuri Dixit rejected Ilzaam, Govinda’s second film.
- Her secretary, Rikku Rakesh Nath, influenced the decision.
- Neelam replaced Madhuri in Ilzaam, Aag Hi Aag, and Paap Ki Duniya — all hits.
- Pahlaj Nihalani got frustrated with Madhuri’s refusals.
- He later cast her in Tezaab, which became her breakthrough.
- Govinda and Madhuri worked together eventually, but the earlier pairing was missed.
