The legal battle intensifies as Priya Kapur challenges her step-children’s claim on late Sunjay Kapur’s ₹30,000 crore estate in court.
The ongoing courtroom battle over the vast estate of late industrialist Sunjay Kapur took a dramatic turn on Wednesday. Priya Kapur, Sunjay’s widow, contested the claim by Karisma Kapoor’s two children who seek a share in their father’s personal assets.
Background of the Dispute
- Sunjay Kapur passed away on June 12 after collapsing during a polo match in England.
- His March 21 will reportedly leaves his entire personal estate to his wife, Priya Kapur.
- Karisma Kapoor’s children—Samaira and Kiaan—have filed a petition claiming they were unaware of this will and are entitled to a share of their father’s assets.
Priya Kapur’s Defense
- Advocate Rajiv Nayar, representing Priya Kapur, said the suit filed by Karisma’s children is “not maintainable.”
- He emphasized Priya as the “last lawfully wedded wife” and questioned the timing and sincerity of the children’s claims, pointing to the couple’s acrimonious divorce finalized in 2016.
- Priya also stated that Karisma’s children have already received assets worth ₹1,900 crore from the RK Family Trust.
- She criticized the petitioners, saying, “So much crying… I don’t know how much is enough.”
Claims by Karisma’s Children
- Alleged that Priya Kapur attempted to forge their father’s will to gain control of his assets.
- Requested partition of the estate, full accounting, and a permanent injunction against Priya Kapur and others named in the suit.
- They claimed the will was concealed for seven weeks and only revealed during a family meeting on July 30.
- The children argue the will is unregistered and question Priya’s sudden appointment as Managing Director of a company controlling key trust assets just before Sunjay’s funeral.
Court Proceedings
- Justice Jyoti Singh directed Priya Kapur to share the will and provide a list of all movable and immovable assets as of June 12.
- Next hearing scheduled for October 9.
- The court issued notices and asked for replies within two weeks.
