Congress leader Rahul Gandhi sharply criticised the Centre in the Lok Sabha over the recently announced India-US trade deal, accusing the government of hurting national interests and failing to protect farmers and small businesses.
During the Budget Session debate, the Leader of the Opposition said the agreement was not balanced and claimed it favoured the United States.
What Rahul Gandhi Said in Parliament
Rahul Gandhi used strong words while attacking the government.
He said:
- The trade deal is “one-sided”
- Indian farmers and small industries may suffer
- The government failed to negotiate strongly
In a sharp remark, he accused the Centre of “selling Bharat Mata” and asked if it had “no shame” while signing the agreement.
His speech led to loud protests from ruling party MPs.
Concerns Raised Over Farmers and Tariffs
Rahul Gandhi said that certain decisions in the trade agreement could impact:
- Agriculture
- Dairy sector
- Small and medium businesses
He also pointed to tariff changes between the two countries and questioned whether India received fair terms in return.
According to him, the government should have protected sensitive sectors more firmly during negotiations.
Government Responds
Members of the ruling party rejected the allegations.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju objected to Rahul Gandhi’s language and defended the agreement. Government leaders said the deal supports India’s economic growth and strengthens ties with the United States.
They described the Opposition’s criticism as politically motivated.
Heated Debate in Lok Sabha
The exchange turned into a heated debate in the House, with both sides defending their stand. The discussion took place during broader Budget Session proceedings.
The India-US trade deal continues to draw political reactions, with the Opposition demanding more clarity on its long-term impact.
