Election Commission Slams Rahul Gandhi Over “Vote Chori” Remark

Poll body says allegations must be backed by proof, calls term “dirty word” that defames voters and officials

Rahul Gandhi’s “Vote Fraud” Claim Sparks EC Rebuttal

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has strongly criticised Congress leader and Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi for using the phrase “vote chori” (vote theft) in his campaign, calling it an “assault on the integrity” of the electoral process.

Mr Gandhi alleged large-scale irregularities during polling in Karnataka’s Mahadevapura in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, accusing the ECI of colluding with the BJP to secure the ruling party’s win.

ECI Demands Evidence, Rejects Blanket Accusations

Responding to the claims, the ECI emphasised that India’s “One Person, One Vote” principle is enshrined in election law since the first general elections.

“If anyone has proof of a person voting twice, it should be submitted with a written affidavit to the ECI instead of labelling all voters as ‘chor’ without evidence,” the poll body said.

The ECI warned that such language damages the self-esteem of lakhs of poll officials and undermines the trust of crores of voters. It described the term “vote chori” as a “dirty word” that directly attacks the honesty of the electoral process.

Affidavit Request and Gandhi’s Response

Following his allegations, the ECI asked Mr Gandhi to submit an affidavit detailing the evidence. However, the Congress leader refused, saying:

“This is their data from their own website. I will not sign an affidavit. This is just a move to distract from the real issue.”
