Interim leadership steps in as BCCI prepares for upcoming elections and sponsorship changes
Roger Binny Steps Down as BCCI President
Sources have confirmed that Roger Binny is no longer serving as the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Following recent developments, the vice-president has taken over as the new interim chief. This transition comes ahead of the next BCCI elections, expected to be held in September.
Rajeev Shukla to Lead Until Elections
Rajeev Shukla, who was unanimously re-appointed as the chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2015 and elected unopposed as BCCI vice-president in 2020, will serve as acting president until the election process concludes later this year. The decision was made during the recent BCCI Apex Council meeting, where key discussions included securing a new lead sponsor for Team India after Dream11’s exit earlier this month.
Sponsorship Challenge Ahead of Asia Cup
With the Asia Cup scheduled to begin on September 9, the BCCI faces a significant challenge in finalizing a new sponsor in time for the tournament. The board has decided to focus on acquiring a long-term sponsor for the next two and a half years, covering up to the 2027 ODI World Cup, rather than opting for a short-term deal.
BCCI Operations Under Current Rules
Despite the recent passing of the National Sports Governance Act in Parliament, the BCCI will conduct its Annual General Meeting and elections under the existing constitution for now. This constitution is based on the Supreme Court’s Lodha Committee recommendations.
Impact of New Governance Rules
The Lodha Committee guidelines cap the age of office-bearers at 70, but the new sports governance law allows candidates up to 75 years old, depending on international statutes. Additionally, office bearers are limited to a maximum of nine years in total or six consecutive years in a post, meaning similar leadership changes may follow in various state associations.
What’s Next for BCCI?
The interim chief will maintain the board’s continuity while preparing for a smooth election process. The appointment signals a shift towards complying with governance reforms while managing critical upcoming events such as the Asia Cup and sponsorship agreements.
