Russia Backs India’s Bid for Permanent UN Security Council Seat, Calls for Reform

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov says the global balance has changed since the UN was formed and supports India’s inclusion in the reformed UNSC.

Russia Supports India for Permanent Seat in UNSC, Urges Urgent Reform

In a strong endorsement at the United Nations, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has voiced support for India’s bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council (UNSC), emphasizing the need for urgent reforms to reflect the modern global order.

Lavrov’s Key Remarks at UNGA

  • Lavrov stated that Russia supports the applications of both India and Brazil for permanent UNSC seats.
  • He noted the current global balance is drastically different from what it was when the UN was established 80 years ago.
  • Reforms, he said, are essential to make the Security Council more effective, representative, and democratic.

“The Security Council must reflect today’s global realities, not those of 1945,” Lavrov said.

Global South Representation: Asia, Africa & Latin America

Lavrov emphasized the importance of:

  • Better representation from Asia, Africa, and Latin America
  • Strengthening collective voices through forums like SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organization) and BRICS

He added that such platforms play a special role in coordinating the interests of the developing world, reflecting the rising influence of the Global South.

Growing Global Support for India

In addition to Russia:

  • Mauritius: Foreign Minister Dhananjay Ramful said India deserves a seat “commensurate with its constructive global role.”
  • Bhutan: PM Tshering Tobgay said a reformed UNSC “must include deserving nations like India and Japan.”

These remarks show growing international support for India’s decades-long demand to reform the UN Security Council.

India’s Push for UNSC Reform

India has repeatedly highlighted:

  • The outdated structure of the Security Council
  • Its exclusion of major global players like India
  • The need for a more democratic and inclusive system

On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar chaired a BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting, where the joint statement reiterated support for the Johannesburg-II Declaration (2023), calling for a comprehensive UNSC overhaul.
