Pakistan Confirms Saudi Arabia Will Defend It Against India in Case of War

Defence Pact Includes Military and Nuclear Support, Says Pak Minister

Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has confirmed that Saudi Arabia will militarily support Pakistan if India initiates a war, under the new defence pact signed this week in Riyadh.

What the Defence Pact Says

The “mutual defence agreement” signed during Pakistani PM Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to Riyadh outlines:

  • Joint military support in case of external aggression
  • Nuclear cooperation, if necessary
  • A clause resembling NATO’s Article 5, implying that an attack on one is an attack on both

“Yes, absolutely. There is no doubt about it,” Mr. Asif told Geo TV when asked if Saudi Arabia would step in militarily.

Not an Aggression Pact, Says Asif

  • Mr. Asif emphasized this is a defensive pact, not an offensive alliance.
  • “If there is aggression, whether against Saudi Arabia or Pakistan, we will jointly defend against it.”
  • The goal is to deter aggression, not provoke conflict, he reiterated.

Pakistan’s Nuclear Arsenal ‘Available’ to Saudi Arabia

  • In a separate interview with Reuters, Mr. Asif confirmed that Pakistan’s nuclear capabilities could be available to Saudi Arabia under the pact.
  • He insisted this does not violate international norms, saying: “Our capabilities will absolutely be available under this pact… and we’ve never committed violations.”

A Saudi official also told Reuters the pact is “a comprehensive defensive agreement that encompasses all military means,” implicitly confirming the nuclear shield possibility.

India Reacts

India responded by downplaying the development, stating:

  • The deal “formalises a long-standing arrangement” between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia
  • The implications are under review

Global Implications: A New Arab Nuclear Alliance?

According to analysts:

  • Pakistan gains: potential Arab financial support, military alliances
  • Saudi Arabia gains: access to a “nuclear umbrella”
  • Israel and Iran are likely to monitor developments closely

“This could be the start of a broader Arab alliance,” Mr. Asif hinted, although he declined to confirm any wider coalition.
