"Some Still Trying To Prove They're Indian": Shahid Afridi Stirs Controversy Before India vs Pakistan Clash

Former Pakistan captain revives World Championship of Legends row, takes veiled digs at ex-India stars ahead of Asia Cup 2025 showdown.

As the cricketing world gears up for the high-voltage India vs Pakistan clash in the Asia Cup 2025 on Sunday, former Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi has triggered yet another controversy with his remarks about former Indian cricketers.

Afridi Revives WCL Controversy

Appearing on Samaa TV, Afridi revisited the World Championship of Legends (WCL) incident, where the Indian side twice refused to play against Pakistan amid tense diplomatic ties.

“I have always said that cricket should go on; it has always helped in making relations better between the two countries. In England, people had bought tickets to see the WCL match, and the players had practised. Then you didn’t play. What was the thinking? I just can’t understand,” Afridi remarked.

The “Rotten Egg” Remark

Afridi also returned to his infamous “rotten egg” comment, which was perceived as a dig at former India opener Shikhar Dhawan, who had opted out of playing against Pakistan.

Without naming anyone directly, Afridi claimed:

“The player I referred to as a bad egg, his captain also told him, ‘If you don’t want to play, then don’t play. Just don’t tweet on social media.’ But that player had come with an ulterior motive. That is why he was a bad egg.”

Fresh Digs at Indian Stars

Launching another thinly-veiled attack, Afridi hinted at some Indian cricketers who are now commentators in the Asia Cup 2025:

“Some are still trying to prove they are Indian. Now they are doing commentary in the Asia Cup,” he said, without naming anyone.

A Familiar Pattern of Provocation

Afridi’s controversial comments have once again stoked tensions just before the highly anticipated Indo-Pak clash. Known for his outspoken views, the former all-rounder has often found himself at the center of diplomatic and sporting rows with India.

With both teams set to face off on Sunday, Afridi’s remarks are likely to add further spice to what is already one of the most intense rivalries in world cricket.

As tensions rise ahead of the India vs Pakistan Asia Cup 2025 clash, Afridi’s remarks have added fuel to the fire. Fans and cricket pundits alike will be watching closely, as the on-field action promises to be just as intense as the off-field drama.
