Shreyas Iyer’s Father Breaks Silence On Asia Cup Snub: "Mera Naseeb..."

After being left out of the Asia Cup 2025 squad despite stellar IPL form, Shreyas Iyer’s father speaks out, while former cricketers question selectors’ decision.

Shreyas Iyer’s Father Reacts to Asia Cup Exclusion

Santosh Iyer, father of Indian batter Shreyas Iyer, expressed his disappointment after his son was not selected for the Asia Cup 2025 squad. Despite Shreyas’ impressive performances in domestic cricket and as captain of Punjab Kings in IPL 2025, he was omitted from both the main squad and the reserves list.

“I don’t know what else Shreyas has to do to make it to the Indian T20 team,” Santosh told Times of India. “He’s been performing consistently well for years—from Delhi Capitals to Kolkata Knight Riders to Punjab Kings. He even captained KKR to the IPL title in 2024 and led PBKS to the final this year.”

He added, “I’m not asking for him to be captain of India, but at least select him in the team. Even if he’s left out, he never shows dissent. He’ll simply say, ‘Mera naseeb hai’ (It’s my luck). He stays calm and composed.”

Despite his calm nature, Santosh admitted that Shreyas must be disappointed deep down.

Former Cricketer Mohammad Kaif Questions Selectors

Mohammad Kaif also criticized the selectors for ignoring Shreyas despite his form.

“Shreyas Iyer’s name didn’t even come up,” Kaif said on his YouTube channel. “The selectors said it was difficult to fit him in as only 15 players could be picked. I understand that, but even after praising him, his name wasn’t in the standby list.”

Selectors Defend The Decision

India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained, “It’s not Shreyas’ fault nor ours. You can pick only 15 players, and he will have to wait for his chance.”

Why Fans Are Upset

  • IPL 2025 captaincy success with Punjab Kings
  • Led KKR to IPL title in 2024
  • Consistent domestic and franchise performances
  • Omitted from both squad and reserves
  • Emotional response from father

As the Asia Cup 2025 approaches, the exclusion of Shreyas Iyer continues to spark debate among fans, experts, and cricket enthusiasts. While selectors maintain their stance, the strong performances and leadership qualities displayed by Shreyas in recent seasons make many wonder when he will get his next opportunity to represent India on the big stage. For now, both Shreyas and his supporters remain hopeful and patient, trusting that his ‘naseeb’ will turn in his favor soon.
