Simranjeet Singh, once a net bowler to 12-year-old Shubman Gill, now faces him on the international stage in the India vs UAE Asia Cup clash.
A Friendship Rekindled on the Cricket Field
As India gears up to face UAE in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 clash, one subplot has captured hearts — a nostalgic reunion between Shubman Gill and his childhood practice buddy, Simranjeet Singh.
“I have known Shubman since he was a kid, but I don’t know if he remembers me,” says 35-year-old Simranjeet with a shy smile, ahead of what might be the biggest match of his career.
The Dream of India — Then Came COVID
Despite years in Punjab’s domestic circuit, Simranjeet never got the breakthrough he hoped for.
- Played district cricket and was named in the Ranji probables in 2017.
- Bowled at IPL franchise Kings XI Punjab’s nets.
- Life changed in April 2021, when he traveled to Dubai just before India’s second COVID wave.
“I came for 20 days. Then the second wave hit and I got stuck here. Eventually, I made it my home,” he said.
Journey to UAE National Team
After fulfilling eligibility requirements by playing 3 seasons of domestic cricket in UAE, Simranjeet contacted head coach Lalchand Rajput and earned a trial.
- Joined the UAE national team and secured a central contract.
- Now a key player with 15 wickets in 12 T20Is, bowling with control and flight.
- Notable performance: 1/24 vs Afghanistan with 11 dot balls.
“Not many spinners have the courage to give flight in T20s. Simranjeet does,” praises coach Rajput.
Faith, Family, and Freedom in UAE
A devout Sikh, Simranjeet says UAE has respected his identity.
“No one has ever questioned my beard, kara, or kirpan. I’ve been treated with respect and dignity here.”
Whom Will His Family Support?
Born and raised in Punjab but now representing UAE, Simranjeet laughs when asked who his family will support.
“The dream was always to play for India, but now I’m wearing UAE’s jersey… I think they’ll cheer for me,” he chuckles.
India vs UAE: A Match with Heart
As the world watches India take on UAE in the Asia Cup, for Simranjeet Singh, it’s a full-circle moment — from bowling at a young Shubman Gill to now facing him on the international stage.
