Former India captain says Bengal batter deserves a chance at No. 3 amid ongoing selection debate.
Former India captain and ex-BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has spoken in favour of Bengal batter Abhimanyu Easwaran, saying the 28-year-old deserves his long-awaited Test debut. Despite being in the national setup since 2021-22, Easwaran has yet to make his debut.
Ganguly highlighted that the No. 3 position looked vulnerable during the recent five-match Test series against England, where both Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair struggled.
“He has age on his side. I still believe he will get his chance,” Ganguly said at an event in Kolkata.
“Maybe Easwaran will be tried at No. 3. Players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, and Ravindra Jadeja have got runs, but the No. 3 slot was fragile.”
Missed Chances & Selection Frustration
Since Easwaran’s first call-up, 15 players have made their Test debut, but he continues to wait. His omission from the England series despite impressive domestic form has sparked debate.
Easwaran’s first-class record:
- Matches: 103
- Runs: 7,841
- Average: 48.70
Father’s Strong Words
Easwaran’s father, Ranganathan Easwaran, recently expressed frustration over his son’s repeated exclusions. Speaking in an interview, he claimed Gautam Gambhir and the coaching staff had promised his son a long run once selected.
“He should have played at one down. Abhimanyu has the experience of playing on green tracks, especially at Eden Gardens. Records speak for him,” his father said.
He also questioned Sai Sudharsan’s inclusion given his inconsistent scores in the series (0, 30, 61, 0).
What’s Next For Easwaran?
With Ganguly’s backing and his consistent domestic record, cricket fans are now watching whether Easwaran will finally be handed his Test debut in upcoming series.
With selectors under scrutiny and public support from legends like Sourav Ganguly, Abhimanyu Easwaran’s Test debut may just be a matter of time — a decision eagerly awaited by fans and cricket experts alike.
