The high-profile legal battle over the late industrialist Sunjay Kapur’s ₹30,000 crore estate has taken a fresh turn, with his widow Priya Kapur filing new applications in the Delhi High Court accusing her mother-in-law Rani Kapur of perjury and seeking dismissal of Rani Kapur’s suit challenging the family trust. This development comes a day after the court criticised the parties for “washing dirty linen in public” in the ongoing inheritance dispute.
Priya Kapur’s New Legal Move
Priya Kapur has filed applications in the Delhi High Court that:
- Seek dismissal of the civil suit filed by Rani Kapur that challenges the RK Family Trust.
- Allege perjury by Rani Kapur, claiming the mother-in-law made false statements in her suit.
- Describe the earlier suit as a “gross abuse of the legal process” involving alleged concealment of material facts.
In her filings, Priya Kapur’s legal team contends that several allegations in Rani Kapur’s original suit are “utterly false” and merit dismissal.
Rani Kapur’s lawyers have opposed the applications, saying they lack merit and should not derail the main suit.
Court Directs Replies, Sets Deadlines
The Delhi High Court, presided over by Justice Mini Pushkarna, accepted Priya Kapur’s applications and:
- Issued a notice to Rani Kapur, asking her to file a response within four weeks.
- Allowed Priya Kapur to file a rejoinder within two weeks after that, if needed.
These developments add new legal layers to the already complex dispute over trust control and estate distribution.
How the Dispute Began
The inheritance battle dates to disagreements following Sunjay Kapur’s death in June 2025, when his mother, Rani Kapur, challenged the validity of the RK Family Trust — a trust she claimed was created without her genuine consent.
Rani Kapur alleged that:
- She was pressed into signing documents during a vulnerable period after her son’s death.
- The trust was used to divert substantial assets without her full understanding.
- The trust should be declared illegal and void and assets restored to her control.
Court’s Earlier Remark on Public Legal Battle
In an earlier hearing, the Delhi High Court criticised all sides for turning the family’s internal dispute into a public spectacle, saying that airing personal legal battles openly was “very sorry” and urging parties to consider mediation instead of prolonged litigation.
That remark quickly drew media attention because of the sizeable estate at stake and the intensity of allegations exchanged among family members.
What Happens Next
With both sides now locked in procedural and factual fights, the court will next focus on written responses and rejoinders to Priya Kapur’s latest applications.
Legal experts say the addition of perjury allegations could significantly influence future arguments and may narrow the scope of contested issues if the court finds merit in either side’s claims.
The case continues as one of India’s most closely watched inheritance disputes involving private trusts, family assets, and competing legal narratives.
