"Pig" and "Anti-Women" Remarks Spark TMC Clash: Kalyan Banerjee Resigns

After a heated exchange with Mahua Moitra involving personal insults, TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee steps down as chief whip. Mamata Banerjee urges MPs to stay united.

A public spat between Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs Kalyan Banerjee and Mahua Moitra has caused major unrest within the party. The clash, which involved personal insults like “pig” and “anti-women”, has now led to Banerjee stepping down as the party’s chief whip in Lok Sabha.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stepped in during a virtual party meeting, asking all MPs to stop internal fights and instead focus on national issues such as the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and Special Intensive Revision.

🔹 Kalyan Banerjee Resigns as Chief Whip

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Kalyan Banerjee confirmed his resignation, stating:

“I quit as the party’s chief whip because Didi pointed out a lack of coordination among MPs. The blame lies with me, so I chose to step down.”

🔹 The Verbal Exchange That Sparked the Controversy

The issue began after Mahua Moitra, in a podcast interview, referred to Banerjee as a “pig”, saying:

“You don’t wrestle with a pig because the pig enjoys it and you get dirty.”

She made the comment in response to Kalyan Banerjee’s personal remarks about her marriage to former BJD MP Pinaki Misra. Banerjee had accused her of being “anti-women” and “breaking a 40-year-old family”.

🔹 Moitra Calls Out Misogyny

Mahua Moitra later posted on X (formerly Twitter), condemning what she called deeply misogynistic comments and wrote:

“Misogyny in India cuts across party lines. What differentiates @AITCofficial is that we condemn these disgusting comments no matter who makes them.”

🔹 Banerjee Fires Back on X

In a lengthy post on X, Kalyan Banerjee strongly objected to Moitra’s words, saying:

“Labeling a male colleague as ‘sexually frustrated’ isn’t boldness—it’s outright abuse. If a man used this language about a woman, there would be national outrage.”

He also criticized her use of the term “pig,” calling it dehumanizing and a violation of civil norms.

🔹 Party Reacts as Tensions Rise

Senior TMC MP Sougata Roy said he saw Moitra crying after the incident and demanded that Kalyan Banerjee be removed from his post.

The controversy has come at a time when the TMC is already facing internal divisions, with leaked messages and growing tensions between factions.

📌 What Mamata Banerjee Said

During the party’s virtual meeting, Mamata Banerjee reminded her MPs that the real fight was against the central government, not each other. She instructed all members to stay united and focus on issues affecting the public.
