32-year-old Madhu Singh allegedly tortured for dowry by her husband, a Merchant Navy officer, found dead after five months of domestic abuse.
A 32-year-old woman from Lucknow, Madhu Singh, was found dead under suspicious circumstances, just five months after her marriage to a Merchant Navy officer. While her husband, Anurag Singh, claims it was suicide, her family alleges a pattern of physical abuse, dowry harassment, and forced abortion, culminating in her murder.

Key Highlights:
- Husband claims suicide, family alleges dowry murder
- Evidence of domestic violence, forced abortion, and extramarital affair
- Accused arrested; dowry chats, hotel stays, and audio recordings emerge
- Police investigating inconsistencies in husband’s statements
A Lavish Wedding, Dowry Demands & Abuse Begins
Madhu married Anurag on February 25, 2025, after meeting him on a matrimonial platform. Anurag, employed as a second officer with a Hong Kong-based shipping company, allegedly demanded ₹15 lakh dowry, according to Madhu’s father, Fateh Bahadur Singh.
“We managed ₹5 lakh, but he insisted on ₹15 lakh. After the wedding, he kept pressuring us,” said Madhu’s father in the police complaint.

Just weeks after the wedding, Anurag allegedly assaulted Madhu, prompting her to return to her parental home. Following additional dowry payments, she returned to her husband—but the torture continued.
Isolated & Controlled: “He Finished Her Social Life”
Madhu’s sister Priya shared that her once-lively sibling had become isolated and fearful.
“He didn’t let her speak to anyone, monitored her phone, her orders, her calls,” Priya said.
Madhu allegedly faced violence for trivial reasons, such as where she placed a bottle or a plate. In a chilling audio clip, Madhu says:
“Mujhe bohut mara… because I didn’t keep the bottle right in front of him.”

Affair, Pregnancy & Forced Abortion
The family claims Anurag was cheating on Madhu and even forced her to abort a pregnancy. He allegedly spent a night with his ex-girlfriend in a hotel on July 31, days before Madhu was found dead. She reportedly confronted him after discovering his chats.
Suspicious Delay in Reporting Her Death
Anurag claimed he found Madhu hanging around noon on August 4, but the family was only informed at 4:30 PM—a 5-hour delay. Police also found that:
- He asked the maid not to come that day.
- He ordered food online at 10:30 AM, hours before calling for help.
- The maid rang the bell several times but no one opened the door.
Husband Arrested, No Clear Answers
Police have arrested Anurag Singh. He has been booked under the Dowry Prohibition Act and sections related to cruelty under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. When questioned about the circumstances that could lead to suicide, he remained silent.
Officers say Anurag repeatedly asked for cigarettes while in custody.
