Vaishno Devi Shrine Gears Up for Reopening After Landslide Tragedy
The Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) has decided to reintroduce wireless communication systems to boost security and coordination along the yatra route, as the holy shrine reopens on Sunday, following a 19-day closure due to a devastating landslide on August 26 that killed 34 pilgrims and injured 20.
Navratri Pilgrimage Expected to Draw Massive Crowd
A high-level meeting chaired by SMVDSB CEO Sachin Kumar Vaishya was held to review arrangements for the Shardiya Navratras (Sept 22 – Oct 1), which is expected to bring large footfalls of devotees to Katra and the shrine.

- Ready access to gas cutters, rescue gear, and firefighting equipment
Crowd Management
- Extra signage, public announcements, and patrol monitoring
- Designated holding areas in Katra for weather-related disruptions
- Verification of pithoo and ponywallas to prevent impersonation
Pilgrim Guidelines
- Mandatory RFID cards for all devotees
- Extra handheld scanners and trained staff for verification
Infrastructure & Amenities
- Improve lighting in dark spots
- Ensure sanitation, drinking water, and smooth vehicular movement
- Upgrade systems wherever required after physical audits
Security Forces Flag Key Challenges
