Government Pushes Citizens To Claim Long-Forgotten Financial Assets

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged all Indians to take part in the ‘Your Money, Your Right’ movement — an initiative that helps people recover money lying unclaimed in banks, insurance policies, mutual funds, and dividend accounts.

The PM encouraged citizens to check whether they or their family members have any old deposits or investments that were forgotten over time.

What Is the ‘Your Money, Your Right’ Movement?

The initiative was launched to help people easily find and claim financial assets that have remained untouched for years. These include:

Unclaimed bank deposits
Unpaid insurance proceeds
Unclaimed mutual fund investments
Unpaid dividends and shares

To make it simple for citizens, the government has provided dedicated online platforms for each category.

How Much Unclaimed Money Exists?

According to official estimates:

Banks hold about ₹78,000 crore in unclaimed deposits
Insurance companies have over ₹14,000 crore
Mutual funds hold nearly ₹3,000 crore
Unpaid dividends and shares add up to ₹9,000 crore

These amounts belong to people who either forgot about their accounts, changed addresses, shifted banks, or were unaware of their deceased family members’ investments.

Where Can Citizens Check Their Unclaimed Money?

People can verify and claim their funds through:

RBI’s portal – for unclaimed bank deposits
IRDAI platform – for insurance proceeds
SEBI’s MITRA portal – for mutual fund investments
MCA and related portals – for unpaid dividends and shares

The government has also conducted facilitation camps in 477 districts so citizens can get help in person.

How Much Money Has Already Been Returned?

So far, around ₹2,000 crore has reportedly been returned to rightful owners through this movement. Many people were able to retrieve money from accounts or policies they didn’t even know existed.
