Fans Gather in Large Numbers to Honor Zubeen Garg

Hundreds of fans and well-wishers poured into Guwahati on Sunday to pay their final respects to renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, who tragically passed away after a scuba diving accident in Singapore. His mortal remains arrived earlier in the day and were received by his wife, Garima Saikia, amid heavy crowd turnout.

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Receives the Body in Delhi

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who had travelled to Delhi to receive the singer’s body, revealed that Garg’s casket did not fit on a chartered flight and had to be transported on a commercial flight to Guwahati. Sarma was accompanied by Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita and senior Assam officials.

Scuffle and Police Action at Guwahati Airport

At Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, a massive crowd had gathered to receive the singer’s body. A scuffle broke out among the attendees, forcing police to intervene with a mild lathi charge to disperse the crowd and restore order, according to PTI reports.

Final Respects and Public Homage

The singer’s body was kept at his residence for approximately one and a half hours to allow family members to pay their last respects. It is now scheduled to be moved to the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex, where the public can pay homage between 9 am and 7 pm.

Last Rites to Be Decided Soon

The Assam government will consult with Garg’s family and community organizations before finalizing the last rites. The state Cabinet is expected to meet on Sunday evening to decide on the cremation venue.

Details on the Tragic Incident

CM Sarma shared that Garg had been on a yacht trip and was advised by lifeguards to wear a life jacket while swimming. Initially, Garg wore the jacket but removed it shortly after, saying it was oversized and restricting his swimming. He was later found floating unconscious in the sea. Despite attempts at CPR and emergency treatment at Singapore General Hospital, he was declared dead. Singapore authorities are currently investigating the circumstances with those who accompanied him.
