“Zubeen Is Finally Coming Home,” She Says as Mortal Remains Arrive in Guwahati
Garima Saikia Garg, wife of legendary Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, appeared in an emotional video shared via his official Instagram handle, just days after his tragic death in Singapore. With folded hands and tearful eyes, Garima thanked fans for their love and urged for peace and dignity during the singer’s final rites.
“Zubeen is finally coming home. You all showered him with love, and he always gave it back. I hope his final journey is peaceful,” she said.
Thousands Gather to Bid Farewell
Zubeen Garg, 52, passed away on September 19 in Singapore. His body was flown from Delhi to Guwahati on Sunday, where thousands of fans gathered to pay their last respects. The Assam government arranged for his body to lie in state at the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM on September 21.

Garima Defends Zubeen’s Manager Siddharth Sarma
Addressing the ongoing FIRs filed against Zubeen’s manager, Siddharth Sarma, Garima came to his defense:
“Siddharth has been like a brother. In 2020, when Zubeen had a seizure, Siddharth brought us back from Mumbai by bus. He stood by us then—and now. I need him by my side.”
She urged fans to put aside negative sentiments and allow Siddharth to take part in Zubeen’s final journey.
What Happened to Zubeen Garg? Conflicting Reports Emerge
Initial reports suggested that Zubeen collapsed during scuba diving in Singapore and was declared dead at Singapore General Hospital around 2:30 PM IST. However, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma later revealed more details:
“He was seen jumping into the sea wearing a life jacket. After swimming briefly, he removed it saying it was uncomfortable. Moments later, he was found floating, unresponsive.”
An autopsy is scheduled, and Singaporean authorities are investigating the incident. The North East India Festival organisers clarified they were unaware of the unscheduled yacht visit where the tragedy occurred.
Zubeen Garg: A Legacy Beyond Music
Known best for Ya Ali from Gangster and Dil Tu Hi Bataa from Krrish 3, Zubeen Garg was not just a playback singer but a cultural force in Assam. He sang in Assamese, Bengali, and Hindi, acted in and directed regional films like Kanchanjunga, Mission China, and Dinabandhu, and actively promoted Assamese culture.
State Mourning and Final Farewell
The Assam government declared a three-day state mourning, suspending all official entertainment and public celebrations. In an official statement, the government described Zubeen as:
“An artist larger than life… Assam’s beloved son.”
