Surekha Yadav: Asia’s First Woman Loco Pilot Retires After 36 Years of Trailblazing Service

From breaking gender barriers to driving India’s premier trains, Surekha Yadav’s inspiring journey closes as she retires on September 30.

Surekha Yadav Bids Farewell to the Tracks

Asia’s first woman loco pilot, Surekha Yadav, will retire on September 30, 2025, after a 36-year-long journey with Indian Railways. Her career has been nothing short of historic.

On September 18, the Central Railway (CR) announced her upcoming retirement and paid tribute to her legacy. As she arrived at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) on the Hazrat Nizamuddin-CSMT Rajdhani Express, she was welcomed and felicitated by her colleagues, railway staff, and family members.

“A true trailblazer, she broke barriers, inspired countless women, and proved that no dream is beyond reach,” the Central Railway wrote on social media.

From Electrical Engineering to the Railways

Surekha Yadav was born in Satara, Maharashtra, and completed a diploma in electrical engineering. She didn’t initially plan to become a train driver, but life had other plans.

She joined Indian Railways as a trainee assistant driver and gradually worked her way up — a rare feat in a male-dominated profession.

Breaking Records, Driving Change

In 1988, she made history by becoming Asia’s first woman loco pilot.

In 2023, she drove the Vande Bharat Express from Solapur to CSMT, becoming the first woman to operate this prestigious high-speed train.

Despite facing many challenges, she stayed committed to her passion and led by example.

Tributes from Across the Nation

Her achievements have earned her numerous awards at state and national levels. She became a household name, a role model, and an icon of women’s empowerment.

Anand Mahindra, Chairman of the Mahindra Group, was among the many who celebrated her journey.

“Congratulations on being a pioneer, Surekha ji,” he wrote.
“Your contributions must never be forgotten.”

Surekha Yadav’s retirement marks the end of a groundbreaking chapter in Indian Railways. But her legacy continues — not just in records and headlines, but in the hearts of countless women she inspired. Her story proves that no dream is too bold, and no path is too tough, if you have the courage to take the first step.
